RWBY: A Theory on Emerald (Spoilers for Episode 7: War)

War was one huge cliffhanger, wasn’t it? This is your last spoiler warning, just in case. Alright, with that out of the way, let’s get into the meat and potatoes of this theory revolving around RWBY’s illusionist, Emerald Sustrai.

To start with, we need to understand who Emerald is based on. She was a thief on the streets of we assume Vale. She’s based on Aladdin. As we all know, thanks to either Disney or the original story, Aladdin gets his hands on a magical lamp that has a genie, or jinn, in it that will give whoever rubs it three wishes.

Now, the Lamp and Aladdin in RWBY are quite different. For one, there are no wishes, just questions you can ask Jinn, which are still three. However, two have already been used and they replenish every 100 years. I believe that Emerald will get her hands on the Relic of Knowledge and will either use it, or get close to using it. If she does use it, we have Aladdin get the lamp from an evil sorcerer, in this case a sorceress (Salem).

VTuber Becomes a Fan of Vivziepop’s Helluva Boss

Helluva Boss (directed by Vivienne Medrano) a series about a demon imp named Blitz and his small business employees Moxxie, Millie, and receptionist Loona has taken the internet by storm. With its unique cast of characters and familiar voices such as Brandon Rogers, Richard Steven Horvitz, Erica Lindbeck, and Brock Baker fans have been glued to their screens in wait for new episodes.

VTuber Kasai (All Ages of Geek, LLC’s first generation VTuber) recently reacted to Helluva Boss, giving her views and thoughts on the first episode. Mixing popular internet culture with the explosive culture of VTubing, All Ages of Geek is set out to support all forms of creators and their work especially in the animation space.

Kasai has recently become a fan of Vivziepop’s animations and was in shock with how “adult” themed Helluva Boss can be. Vivziepop’s animations outside of Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel tended to be much more vibrant and popping with positivity. Despite the series being a much darker take on her work, Helluva Boss packs a delightful cast of characters who all (deep inside their hellish and crazy personalities) teach us important lessons.

An Adult Cartoon is an Adult Cartoon for a reason. As Vivziepop and her animation team have stated and made clear “This is not a cartoon for kids”. There were some people who nitpicked about this and how the series is too dark and suggestive, but there are disclaimers/warnings for reasons. With the hashtag #AnimationisforEveryone going around and even trending on Twitter we here at All Ages of Geek believe that Vivziepop has made a big improvement to how people think of Adult Cartoons.

Helluva Boss is a unique series and one that has proven how powerful web-cartoons can be with an independent and creative spark to how they are directed. Many aspiring web-animators can learn from Vivienne Medrano’s story and also get inspired on how Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel came to be.

Fandom History Files: Voltron: Legendary Defenders

Hello everyone! I’m Monster Review Girl, and welcome to the Fandom History files!

This will be a series of articles where I go into the history, fandom, and fandom history of a show, as well as fandom and internet phenomenon. For this, my first article, I’m going to cover the Voltron reboot, Voltron: Legendary Defenders!

I’ll be covering the history of the show (both vague plot overview and real-world history of the show), it’s fandom, and how the fandom shifted and changed to reflect the show.

Real-world History and Reception

Debuting on Netflix in mid-2016, the reboot of the 1980’s cartoon of the same name ran for 8 seasons, totaling 78 episodes. With each episode running about 20 minutes, that’s… 1,560 watch minutes, or 26 watch hours. So if you’ve got a day to yourself, with nothing else to do, grab some snacks and watch it.

If you don’t want spoilers, evacuate now! Seriously. Bail out. Go watch it and come back.

Now, this series was not without controversy. The biggest one that wasn’t spawned from its fanbase was the Shiro and Adam debacle. You see Shiro, the pilot of the Black Lion, was gay.

Adam was his ex-fiance that he’d broken up with before going off into space and having the wheels fall off. There were massive complaints due to how the writers handled Adam. By that we mean Adam getting off in the latter half of season 7. Shiro marrying someone else in the series finale’s “two years later” epilogue didn’t help. To which I have to say, Guys, do we need to see every second of a character’s interactions with another character to justify them getting together?

The creators answered the complaints with “We’re sorry, we wanted to handle this differently, but we were under certain restrictions for handling the LGBTQ community. Our bad.” and admitted that the wedding epilogue scene was an attempt at an olive branch they probably shouldn’t have rushed.

The story

Now, on to the story. The story follows the humans Shiro, Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge, as well as the space elf Alteans Allura and Coran. as they try to fix the flaming outrage that is the Galran empire currently tyrannying all over space. It’s very Monster of the Week, but there’s enough of an overarching plot to keep the viewer invested. I wish I could go into more beyond the plot points I need to for this article, but there’s a LOT.

The first season focuses a lot on our merry band of five adjusting to their new environment and obligations. We find out that this incarnation made Pidge, the tech-savvy Green Lion pilot – into a girl. This was handled well by the writers, namely that the reveal that Pidge was a girl changed nothing about how the guys handled her.

There are a lot of points where characters learn things about themselves as people and it helps them grow as characters. Keith discovering his mother was a Galran rebel who fled Earth to protect him was a huge character moment for him, and even ended with him joining the same rebellion as his mother for a time. Don’t worry, the mom survives to the end of the show.

Allura learning ancient magics and using them several times is another moment for her, as it brought her closer to her deceased father. I mean, the woman can intimidate a much more experienced sorceress with sheer raw POWER, and perform consciousness transference. That is a FEAT and a half and I have to applaud the character and the writers on that.

The Fandom Itself

Now, sadly, on to the cringey bits of this. The fandom. The Voltron fandom had been a largely quiet one, content to enjoy the show through the veil of nostalgia. Then the reboot came, and with it came a modern fandom. And things got WILD. Like, death threats and doxxing level wild.

And if you’ve been living under a rock, doxxing is the illegal practice of revealing someone’s personal information publicly with malicious intent. The doxxing case involved someone wanting Lance and Keith to become a canonical romantic couple. This was despite Lance having Allura as a romantic interest before her passing.

All in all, I loved this show when I watched it, despite having to ignore the fandom. Could Shiro’s gayness and the issues that came from its representation have been handled differently? Yes. Did the fandom react appropriately? No.

So, go watch the show and enjoy it. Ignore the fandom and enjoy the giant robots and space opera adventure!

Mori Calliope Shocked a VTuber by her Honesty – HoloLive Review

Mori Calliope (森 カリオペ) known as HoloLive EN’s Rapping Reaper is one of the most successful VTubers that took the internet by storm in late 2020. VTubers, as of 2020, have taken over the internet from streaming services on Twitch and YouTube, meme culture, and helping other express themselves in

Mori Calliope is a VTuber who does the VTubing scene right. She is herself. She is her own character. She is a character who is in our world. VTubing isn’t about being who you are as a person. It’s being that character you or a company created and bringing them into our world.

One reason (outside of being on the HoloLive EN team) Mori Calliope is so successful is she does the above. She is herself, doesn’t try to “act a part” and interacts with an audience who accepts her for being a VTuber, not just an entertainer.

About Mori Calliope

Taken from YouTube

The Grim Reaper’s first apprentice. Because the world’s medical system advanced so dramatically, she became a VTuber to collect souls. It seems that the lost souls vaporized by the wholesome relationships of VTubers flow through her as well. In the end, she’s a gentle-hearted girl whose sweet voice contradicts the morbid things she tends to say, as well as her hardcore vocals.

All Ages of Geek Kasai’s Review on Mori Calliope

When All Ages of Geek’s VTuber Kasai first experienced Mori Calliope’s Debut stream she appreciated her honesty. Doing a stream for several hours, while also exposing yourself to thousands of viewers is nothing easy when it’s your first time. Especially when the world is still questioning what exactly VTubing is and you’re making a statement/brand for yourself.

Several words of advice were mentioned during the VTuber’s debut stream such as:

“Be yourself” – A viewer suggested she do on Twitter before the debut.

“It’s okay to make mistakes” –
This represents how much of a struggle a first-time stream can be, especially with all the new and evolving VTuber technology.

HoloLive and Idols

Based on Mori Calliope and even her mishaps during her debut it’s no wonder many people look to these VTubers like idols. What’s an idol? In Japan, idols serve as someone who encourages others to work hard for their dreams and thrives on not just their own but other’s success. They are a pop culture embodiment of important lessons and positivity.

VTubers are becoming these idols and help encourage positivity within their entertainment. HoloLive is one of the agencies that makes sure each of their VTubers are somewhat representing an idol-type personality whether that’s with song and dance, positive advice, fanart, reactions, and gaming.

Check out All Ages of Geek’s VTuber Kasai’s first time reaction to Mori Calliope. And stay tuned for more coverage on the HoloLive VTubing group.

The Mandalorian Season 2’s Pitch Perfect Finale

Greetings, geeks of all ages. With 2020 coming to a close, The Mandalorian Season 2 also comes to an end. The Season is filled to the brim with many great moments, from giving The Clone Wars characters their live action debuts to the emotional through line of the Season. Every episode to date has been worth the wait. Each episode delivers great moments, and the Season Finale does so in spades.

For people who have not watched the Finale or the show in general yet, I’ll keep this spoiler free. Though to be honest, I’m not sure why you haven’t watched it yet if you’ve been following along. In the Season Finale, Jon Favreau pulls out all the stops in delivering a fantastic script. His love for the franchise is made apparent in his script writing. The episode itself pays respect to the lore established in the movies and shows that came before it.

Peyton Reed does a fantastic job directing the episode. Many of the scenes do a great job of building a sense of tension. A sense of foreboding that keeps you waiting with bated breath to see what will happen next. This is complemented by the excellent score by Ludwig Göransson. The music swells with the scene to reflect the mood of each moment. When everything comes together, it becomes a feast for the senses as you are engrossed by the story unfolding on screen.

If you are a fan of excellent story telling, if you’re a fan of great visual effects, hell, if you’re a fan of incredible characters, you owe it to yourself to watch The Mandalorian. It is a fantastic show that really understands the importance of respecting what came before. The show is a love letter to everything fans love about Star Wars. As a life long fan of the franchise, this show has reinvigorated my love for it.

The Mandalorian Spoilers Ahead

Alright, for this next section, I’ll delve deeper into what makes this finale so great. Naturally this entails spoiling the plot of the finale. If you still haven’t watched the episode, please do so before proceeding any further.

So, this episode not only delivers an incredible story, but a healthy amount of wish fulfillment as well. The episode is filled to the brim with fan service. In some cases, fan service can come off as unnecessary. However, the moments feel so natural that it really couldn’t happen any other way.

Dark Forces

One of the things that the Mandalorian re-introduces into Star Wars canon is Dark Troopers. For the uninitiated, the Dark Troopers were introduced in the first-person shooter game Star Wars: Dark Forces. They are the strongest enemies of the game as the game itself revolves around these troopers. This episode does an excellent job of showing just how much of a problem one of these units can be. The titular Mandalorian throws his entire arsenal at just one of these troopers and it shrugs the assault off like nothing happened.

Not only does The Mandalorian canonize the Dark Troopers, it also canonizes the different Phases of them. The project to create the Dark Troopers went through different phases of development. As referenced by the Doctor in the episode, the troopers were initially developed as the next stage of Stormtrooper. Eventually, the Troopers instead became powerful battle droids.

Return of the Jedi

No doubt, the biggest thing to come out of this episode is the return of Luke Skywalker. Fans who watched The Last Jedi were left disappointed in the handling of Luke’s character. Many fans, myself included, wanted to see the Jedi Knight at the height of his power. Instead, what we got was a sad old man that wanted nothing to do with it.

However, the season finale gives us Luke as a fully realized Jedi Knight. Perhaps even more than that, a Jedi Master. The Mandalorian shows how much of a problem one Dark Trooper can be in preparation for Luke’s arrival. While Din Djarin struggled to take down just one, Luke cuts through the entire platoon like paper. The Troopers are little more than moving targets in the face of the hooded Luke Skywalker. And then, in a scene reminiscent of Vader’s appearance in Rogue One, Luke proceeds through a hallway filled with Dark Troopers and rightly ends each and every one of them.

And then, for the cherry on top, Luke pulls off his hood and shows a young Mark Hamill’s face. Admittedly, it’s fairly obvious that the face is a CG recreation. However, that does not detract from the awesomeness of seeing Mark Hamill as Luke once more. From the moment his X-Wing appears to his fight with the Dark Troopers, the entire ending of the Season Finale brought me to tears.

I am fully invested in the story of the Mandalorian and eagerly await the next season. I hope to see a resolution to the hanging thread regarding Mandalore. Perhaps Bo Katan becomes a recurring character that either continually fights Din to reclaim the Darksaber. Or she could become a valiant supporter of Mando and help him become the next ruler of Mandalore. Whatever may happen, I’ll be here, hungry for more.

Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 3 Review

Attack on Titan’s new episode starts off with Reiner remembering a story from the past. He wanted to live with his mother and father and wanted his father to accept him. Attack on Titan’s new season has been an exciting ride for the audience so far. “The Door of Hope” focused on his past to give everyone more of an idea on why he is the way he is. This episode shows the viewers all the suffering that Reiner endured as a child.

Reiner is fighting for a personal reason because he wants to rewrite the fate his family instilled in him. He wants his father to acknowledge him however that does not happen. He is rejected by his father. We learn that Reiner is very loyal but is not skilled like the others.

Image

Most of “The Door of Hope” focuses on Reiner when he is a child starting his Warrior training with Bertolt, Marcel, Annie, and Galliard. Reiner was not chosen for the Armored Titan, Marcel encouraged the higher-ups to chose him to protect his brother. Marcel sacrifices himself to protect Reiner when they are under attack. Making Reiner eager to change the Founding Titan.

Annie and Reiner fight about the mission, after brutally hurting each other they decide to break down Wall Rose. The episode then goes to Reiner in the present time ready to take his life with a loaded gun. He is interrupted by Falco punching the wall outside in frustration. This reminds Reiner he still has people he cares for and a reason to continue living.

At the end of the episode, Falco passes the hospital. He then is seen having a conversation with an injured soldier. Who might just be someone the attack on titan audience is familiar with.
